A City is Built On Design

This piece is called " a city is built on design" it came about when I realised a fine liner pen looks a bit like a tower block, an odd way to get an idea I'll admit but I am really quite pleased with how it developed. 

I have expanded the letters and turned the "i" into a building. I also re-arranged the letters to that the word itself looked like part of a city, not perfectly straight and level, but bending to the contours of the land it’s built on.

"I tried to picture the bar and barman straight-on, to hear the buzz of the restaurant behind me rather than to one side, to imagine the feel of his meal inside me, his weight on my bones, the faint sensation of comfort following the loosening of shoe leather from across the bridge of my toes as he lowered himself back to the floor.
I wondered whether he had picked a whisky he knew well – I imagined so, as the range was not especially adventurous and he seemed to care about which one he was given – and whether, in that case, he was at that moment imagining the walloping peaty taste he knew he was soon to enjoy.
There was something in the showy ease of the barman and the assured way in which he set the glass upon the counter that had about it a hint of performance, a suggestion of the ‘flair’ that sometimes flamboyantly attends the preparation of cocktails; I presumed that the man was noticing this affectation too, with mild irritation at its pointlessness, and making quiet judgements accordingly.
I did the same, following my own references: a blurry memory of a poster for the film Cocktail, and a repeated film-loop of a chess player planting a knight upon a square and firmly twisting it into place with that same defiance.A woman passed by, having emerged from the ladies’ toilet behind me, and the game ended. The sound of the refilling cistern within was bright and loud, and then abruptly muted as the door bumped closed. The fat man wobbled away from the bar and from me, a little inebriated, and my empathy with his thoughts and sensations was lost under the high ceilings of the wide, noisy lounge.

Environment : Font Development

Font Development:

I started off with a relatively ornate font “Cardinal Alternative”. I wanted to link this to the Environment in general and thought a curvy more traditional font would give me a good starting point. I started by using commas from another font to make flourishes, like vines of certain plants, added leaves to certain areas, and curved the harsh bar of the E that wasn’t fitting well with the look of the font.

Charity Shop : A Rare Collection

A Rare Collection. Our brief was to create a print based outcome that centered on an environment of our own choosing. I chose a charity shop I work at in my spare time. This was not only because it was personal to me, but because of the shear range of objects that come though its doors and on to its shelves.

Community Art

This project was based on "Freccles" Friends of Eccles train station, we were asked to help them brighten up our local station by making a series of posters, each based on a different time of the stations history. My group designed the thrid board based on 1830, and the "cutting edge of technology", meaning ours was based on the industry of the time.

Armour and Adornments

My initial drawings were based on birds and insects, done in a variety of black and white/ colour mediums aswell as textiles ( knitting etc). My final piece is based on an earwig. I also looked allot at the idea of armour, turning the insects segments into a helmet and shoulder pad.

Manchester

Painting:

My painting outcome is one of my favourite pieces from my early college life, it links quite heavily with my early sketches, and is meant to show the whole of Manchester in a few seconds. 

Organic Structures

After looking at a variety of different aspects of nature I decided to base my Sculptural final piece was based around a flower, I looked at seed pods and Orchids, and was lucky to find a flower outside college that seemed to be somewhere in between the two.
